The California Medical Board is at it again. Just last week, it denied the application for a California medical license of a young doctor, now a resident at one of southern California's prestigious teaching hospital. The reason--a conviction for a "wet reckless" over two years ago, in another state, for which the doc served his probation, paid his fine, did his substance abuse evaluation, and never repeated.

I'm not saying it's a good thing to be busted for driving while having consumed alcohol. Of course it's *** and dangerous. But this doc never did such a thing before, or after, is sincerely repentant, and certainly could be monitored by a probationary license term. In fact the Board offered that to him, then when he accepted, said, "sorry, just kidding" and withdrew the offer.

We have the Board's Chairwoman, Barbara Yaroslavsky, to blame for this and other debacles. She's trying to build a political base so that she can succeed her publicity-grabbing hubby, Zev (rhymes with Knave) Yaroslavsky, as a Los Angeles County Supervisor. She has no experience in government, and while she's licensed psychologist, she's apparently forgotten that people who commit errors of judgment are capable of remorse and reform.

What about the young doc? He's lost his residency, after serving well for over 2 years. He's leaving the state, trying to rebuild his life, looking for a residency program that will take him, and for an alcohol counselor that will counsel him so that he can demonstrate even more thoroughly to another states' licensing board that he's truly the caring, compassionate and skillful doctor that his peers and professors know him to be.

In the meantime the Board continues to reward licensed docs for bad behavior by ignoring their felony convictions and drug pushing activities. It's all in who you know, and to whose political campaign you contribute. How about looking at Zev (rhymes with Knave) Yarolslavsky's list of donors--wanna bet you see lots of doctors? So long as you're already a part of the Club, ol' Barbie Yaroslavsky will take care of you fine...but if you're not in the Club, which means you can't make a political contribution to hubby, ol' Barby will have you for lunch.

Oh, yeah--the doc who didn't get the license...had cancer about 7 years ago, major surgery to remove the affected organ, radiation and medication, and then went directly to medical school, afterwards right into residency. Not a day off for some counseling. Think he just might suffer from post-trauma stress disorder, maybe a clinical depression compounded by exhaustion? Sure he does. But to Barbie Yaroslavsky, he should be exiled from California 'cause he ain't rich like she and hubby.
